Autism
Autism is a disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and repetitive behavior. It has some genetic basis, although it’s complex due to multiple genes, the environment, and epigenetic factors which do not change DNA sequencing but are passed on to influence gene expression. Several lines of evidence point to synaptic dysfunction as a cause of autism. Some rare mutations may lead to autism by disrupting some synaptic pathways, such as those involved with cell adhesion.
CBD has the ability to modulate and rescue some of these intracellular errors and facilitate the proper messaging within the cell as well is between cells. We know that cannabidiol is very effective for schizophrenia as well as seizure disorders. In addition, cannabidiol has been sho wn to significantly reduce anxiety and improve sleep. Anecdotal reports from families with an autistic child using Elixinol have tell us about significant improvements in understanding, communication, learning and socialization skills.
• Starting dosage recommendation is 6 mg in divided administrations orally. Topical use of tinctures is an option. Response is usually seen within minutes to hours.
• Frequency: My suggestion is CBD three times daily. Adjust the servings to the child’s symptoms and needs. The doses do not all have to be the same. Best absorption is with fatty food or meal but food is not required with CBD.
• Formulations: Best product for autism is liposome 300mg. Each pump is 1mg of CBD.
• Side Effects: rare. occasionally, vivid dreams, fatigue, mild/moderate headache, mild reflux shortly after dose and meal. CBD is not toxic and has no overdose levels. If fatigue, reduce the preceding single dose and add to another dose such as before bed or add a fourth dose to regimen.
• Interactions: CBD can make some drugs stronger in their effect on the body, reduce other medication dose. Suspect one of these medication if any side effects appear. Clobazam is one such medication.
• Nutritional support: omega-3 oils help CBD by stimulating the endogenous cannabinoid system (ECS) in the body. Hemp oils are a healthy source for omega-3, 1T per day. Avoid all processed foods especially sugar. Supplement Vitamin D to keep serum levels above 30ng/mL ideally between 60-100ng/mL. Iodine in the form of kelp. Diet: ketogenic has been effective in this condition. A ketogenic diet consists of very low carbohydrate, high fat, and modest protein, without grains or dairy. It cuts out almost all carbohydrates. There now quality ketone products on the market that appear effective in multiple disorders with or without the ketogenic diet. For more information go to https://goo.gl/54UHyv
• Sulforphane: an extract of broccoli 4 tablets, Avmacol per day.
• Caryophyllene: an extract of black pepper, activated antiinflammatory receptors, compliments CBD. 100mg topical to any skin surface, twice/day. Not oral.
• Ionic magnesium: Trace minerals, 10 drops to skin, as needed for irritability, calming, relaxation. Not oral.
• Maintenance Dose: Keep adjusting the dose, timing and frequency to meet your particular needs. Many users are able to reduce their CBD dose to 1/4 of their acute dose after 2-3 months.
